August Board

Friday -

Hey wassup Key Clubbers!

Welcome back to another INDB Board Recap! August Board marked the halfway point of our terms as your INDB and officially kicked off our work toward making sure the rest of the service year and district events are absolutely top notch. Unlike June Work Day, this was our second full weekend-long meeting, which meant we got to spend a LOT more time together. It was so nice seeing everyone again in person since June!

As a majority of our board are seniors, August Board also marked one of our last "firsts" of high school. Throughout the weekend, we made sure our LTGs had the resources, information, and support they needed to continue serving clubs across the district. It was a jam-packed weekend full of service, planning, presentations, games, and of course... questionable amounts of "Dancing" (if you could even call it that).

Friday night was pretty short but productive. The execs arrived at the hotel, and somehow Olive, the only exec who doesn't go to school in the Indy Metro district and lives an hour away, arrived first. Priorities, I guess.

We spent the evening finalizing the agenda and plans for the weekend, completing exec evaluations, and welcoming our UNICEF Champion, Rubi, who joined us for the weekend! It was great getting everything prepared before our very busy Saturday.
------------------------------------------
Saturday Morning -

Starting the next morning bright and early, we prepared the conference room and grabbed some breakfast before everyone arrived. Rubi and I greeted our amazing LTGs as they came in, and we officially called the meeting to order at 10:02am.

After weekend roll call (where we unfortunately missed Johnny Appleseed LTG Baya Holt and Wapahani VDL Mariam Ba), we jumped right into our icebreaker: Red Light, Green Light... but Key Club hehe.

The classic children's game got everyone moving first thing in the morning, but with a Key Club twist. Whenever someone was caught moving by our Secretary/Treasurer Nifemi, they had to answer a Key Club-related question. These included questions like when Key Club was founded, what the four pillars are, and what their favorite service project was.

The winner was our new UNICEF Champion, Rubi, who I swear was cheating. (Probably, I think....)

Welcoming Our Guests

We also welcomed our IP DA Heidi Polizotto for the first time this service year, along with Mike Downs once again! Both of them provided amazing insights  and advice throughout the weekend, and it was great having them back with us.

During our meeting, we also received a greeting video from the Nebraska-Iowa District talking about how much fun they had seeing us at ICON.

The feelings were mutual, so naturally we immediately recorded a video to send back.
---
District Updates

After that, we moved into several important updates.

Our board reports gave us the opportunity to discuss our successes and challenges from the last quarter. Sec/Tres Nifemi then gave us an ICON recap before Governor Dylan went over LTG check-ins and responsibilities for Quarter Three.

These responsibilities included newsletters, communication, DCMs, GLCs, and potential club visits.

We also learned more about the Japan Key Club Malawi Project. Japan Key Club is looking for partnership  to raise funds to help feed children in Malawi, giving Indiana the  opportunity to participate in international service.

And speaking of international service, a huge congratulations to our very own Taka as a Kiwanis International Trustee!

Indiana's relationship with Japan actually goes back even further. Hobart High School has a sister Key Club in Kobe, Japan, and students from Hobart even traveled there to attend their sister club's graduation. How cool is that?!
---
Key Leader

Next, we moved onto the next big district event after Fall Rally... Key Leader!

Key Leader takes place in October at Camp Tecumseh and registration opened September 1st. It is a weekend-long leadership experience focused on helping students develop effective servant leadership skills through activities, lessons, and plenty of opportunities to grow.

More information about Key Leader is coming soon, but seriously... you should go.
---
Action Items

We then moved into our Action Items for the weekend, including several policy changes.

One of the biggest was officially renaming Key News to the Hoosier Herald!

Congratulations to Olive on the first issue of the Hoosier Herald and to Nifemi on the new District Budget! Both have put in so much work into their respective roles.

Afterward, we had a much-needed pizza lunch before discussing another important change for anyone interested in serving on the district board.

LTG elections will now be moved to DLC instead of being held at a Lieutenant Governor's final DCM. This change will give clubs attending DLC an opportunity to meet and get to know their new LTGs better.
---
Committee Work

After lunch, we broke out into Committee Work Time #1 to make sure all of our Quarter Two directives were completed.

We then received another update from Taka about the Japan Malawi Project before moving into LTG project discussions.

After that, we heard from the one and only Sara Norman, our new International Trustee!

We are so excited to RISE with Sara this year!

Then it was time for Committee Work Time #2, where we started working on our new Quarter Three directives.

Committee Chairs later reported on all the amazing work their committees have completed so far:
  • Service has worked on service spotlights, policy changes, and service project planning.
  • Events & Planning has been working hard on Fall Rally planning and promotion.
  • K-Fam has been categorizing the different K-Family clubs throughout the district and, as they mentioned, sending A LOT of emails to build connections.
  • Mem-Dev has been creating chartering and reactivation resources along with scholarship opportunities.

Safe to say our committees haven't been wasting any time.
---
Fall Rally

E&P then returned to give us another update on Fall Rally.

There's not much more I can say because... Be there or be square.

Seriously. You don't want to miss it.
---
Mafia

Since we had accomplished so much and were ahead of schedule, we decided to take a little break and play the INDB's favorite game... Mafia.

We played a quick round to keep everyone's energy high, and somehow our UNICEF Champion Rubi and Land of Lakes VDL Kamryn both made it far.

Until Indy Metro somehow guessed correctly and got them BOTH out. Amazing intuition from Ester!
---
Service Project

Next, our Service Committee presented the district service project for this board meeting....

Operation: Backpack!

Board members brought in gently used backpacks, which we filled with necessary school supplies and inspiring bookmarks before donating them to this amazing organization.

It was a simple project, but it was a great reminder that service doesn't always have to be complicated to make an important impact.
---

UNICEF Champion

Next, our UNICEF Champion Rubi presented on her role!

As UNICEF Champion, Rubi serves as an ambassador connecting UNICEF and Key Club while hosting initiatives throughout the district to raise funds and awareness for UNICEF's work.

We're so excited to have her serving with us this year!

---

More Presentations!

Our presentations continued with Lakeshore LTG Christian, who discussed Officer Training.

Officer Training is a division-event planned by LtGs where newly elected club officers can learn how to have a successful school year in their new roles.

Our Charter Champion, Yash, then gave the LTGs an overview of his position and explained how he can assist them with chartering and reactivation. He even challenged everyone with an engaging game to test their chartering and reactivation knowledge.

Lastly, Shree, our Water Warrior, joined us over Zoom to give everyone an overview of his position.

---

Public Speaking... Again

And now for everyone's favorite public speaking activity. (not really....)

A long-standing tradition that somehow still exists.

For this activity, Bulletin Editor Olive created random topics that we had to speak about in front of the entire board. Topics included the UNICEF Champion, Key Club's Core Pillars, and, surprisingly... UNO.

The catch, however?

We weren't allowed to say "um" or "like."

So basically, we were fighting for our lives.

-----------------------------------------------------------------------

Saturday Night

After all of that, we finally moved onto dinner!

Once we finished eating, LtGs  spent some time  organizing and editing their RFL binders before moving into September newsletter editing, while execs ensure the incentive chart was marked properly.

Then came my favorite part of the entire weekend...

District Promotionals Work Time.

As District Webmaster, this is where I get to film basically everything I need to keep the district's social media going until November Board.

We filmed Fall Rally and Key Leader promotions, Key Club joining promotions, and a bunch of funny reels to post throughout the year.

As we wrapped up our work, we ended the night with some Board Bonding Time! We played UNO, Just Dance, and even learned some TikTok dances. (just happy to look like a mess)

We officially adjourned for the night and headed off for some very well-deserved rest.

---

Sunday

We called to order bright and early at 9:30am on Sunday.

We started the morning with an update from Circle K Indiana District Governor Robert, who shared his plans and goals for the year.

We then spent some time reviewing our shared Google Drive and Kiwanis Engage to make sure everyone understood where resources were located and how to use the platforms effectively.

Afterward, we received a Kiwanis update from Governor Sue. This was actually our final call-in with her as Governor, because in November, Greg Ayers, Governor-Elect, will have officially became District Governor.

Finally, we ended our meeting with...

Birthdays and Awards!

We celebrated our Quarter Two birthdays, including Governor Dylan, whose birthday was Saturday the 22nd, and Paige, whose birthday was Sunday the 23rd.

We were so happy we got to celebrate both of them with the board!

Other INDB Quarter Two birthdays included:
  • Christian Lutin - 6/17
  • Katelyn Chen - 6/17
  • Olive Levine - 7/2
  • Jeff Blasdel - 7/11
  • Nifemi Oluwagbemiro - 7/16
  • Laura Holloway  - 7/18
  • Kamryn Christe - 8/10
  • Baya Holt - 8/16

And then came our Quarter Two Awards!
  • Best Newsletter: Scenic Farms VDL Sharanjit Kaur
  • Best Communication: Hoosier VDL Tanvi Patel
  • Best Presence: Heartland LtG Rose Tial
  • LtG  of the Quarter: Southwind VDL Eva Carino
  • LTG ICON Awards: Lakeshore LtG Christian & Heartland LtG Rose Tial

Congratulations to everyone!

Lastly, we did our Rose & Thorn. (we don't talk about this, they know why......)

---

August Board was definitely one of our busiest weekends so far, but it was also one of the most fun.

From planning Fall Rally and Key Leader to working on Quarter Three directives, learning other district  positions, completing service projects, filming district promotions, and somehow finding time for dancing like fools, we accomplished A LOT.

More importantly, though, we got another weekend to spend together as a board.

As we reach the halfway point of our service year, I'm excited to see what everyone accomplishes during the rest of our term. Our LTGs have already done so much, and our committees continue to create amazing resources and opportunities.

There's still so much more to come.

And trust me... You don't want to miss it.

Peace Out,
Darrick Colon
