Email subject line: Key Club at (school’s name)- What is Key Club?
Hello ______,
My name is _____, and I am contacting you regarding potentially starting a Key Club at _____. I currently serve as a Lieutenant Governor on the Indiana District Board of Key Club. I help oversee other schools in the area such as _____ and work to support their Key Club. If you are wondering what Key Club is, I will give you a little information below.
WHAT IS KEY CLUB?
Key Club is the world’s largest and oldest student-led service organization. Key Club has multiple branches including K-Kids (Elementary), Builders Club (Middle), Circle K (College), and Kiwanis (Adults). Key Club is a great way to get students active in their homes, schools, and communities. High school students are making a positive impact through the amazing work of Key Club. Members of Key Club perform acts of service in their schools and communities, such as cleaning up parks, collecting clothing, organizing food drives, and so much more! They also learn leadership skills by running meetings/committees, planning projects, and holding elected leadership positions at the club; district; and international levels.
If you are interested in bringing a Key Club to _____, the requirements and process of chartering a club are as follows:
1. Find a community sponsor and/or a local Kiwanis Club. Finding a Kiwanis Club will give the start of the club a strong base. Find a Kiwanis Club HERE.
2. Find an adult/faculty advisor. This person will be supervising the club and giving guidance and advice to members and officers.
3. Recruit members. There must be at least 11 initial members to start an official Key Club.
4. Pay the activation fee. This will make the club an official Key Club, registered at the International level. Needed materials are also included in this fee of $400. Asking your Kiwanis Club or community to help pay this fee is highly suggested, as they are a great resource!
5. Complete the chartering form. The link for the form is HERE. Along with this application, a few documents must be sent to Key Club International.
What makes Key Club better than other service clubs is what Key Club can do for your students at _____.
Key Club helps support effective and confident leaders of their communities as they serve and learn that they can influence real social challenges, problems, and needs.
Key Club also helps improve academic achievement - Statistics show that students who devote time to serving others perform better in school.*
*Eugene C. Roehlkepartain, Benefits of Community-Based Service Learning
Key Club members learn all about service leadership during their time as members. Additionally, Key Club has established an endowed fund called the Youth Opportunities Fund. This fund provides grants for clubs and members as well as scholarships for members.
Key Club members develop strong leadership skills with each opportunity to step up and take part in service projects, social activities, and club functions.
Getting connected with a Key Club and the sponsoring Kiwanis club can also help enhance your school’s reputation in the community and district.
Service projects that engage students also can improve your school’s physical environment.
Consider checking out Key Club International’s website HERE and the Indiana district’s website HERE for more information about our organization.
I hope to hear from you soon regarding your thoughts and opinions about bringing a Key Club to _____. Please do not hesitate to reach out with any questions or concerns.
Thank you!
